American Dream 2012
Plaster
The American Dream was once recognized and associated as the ideal life as a middle class citizen, including a home in the suburbs, family, and white picket fence. Recently, my interpretation of the American Dream is skewed due to the threatened extinction of a middle class. In this work, I chose Barbie and Ken as my ambassadors, American icons of the 1960’s through today. This “ideal” life that Ken and Barbie represented to me growing up, is somewhat of a relic today, or has morphed and changed. American social, economic, and gender issues can be thought about through this piece.
